Northern drug seizure

The Northern District Drug Investigation Service has made two significant seizures of illicit drugs in recent days.

At approximately 9.45 a.m. on Friday 3 December 2010, a man was intercepted at the Launceston Airport after he disembarked from a flight from Sydney. A subsequent search of the man located packages of methylamphetamine, commonly known as “speed”, concealed on his body.

“The total weight of the packages located was significant and we would estimate that the street value of the methylamphetamine seized was at least $500,000,” said Detective Senior Sergeant Ruth Orr.

Shane Joseph Street, 33 years of Summerhill, appeared in an out of hours court on Friday evening, charged with trafficking in a controlled substance. Street was granted bail and is next due to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Wednesday 8 December 2010.

An unrelated search conducted by the Northern District Drug Investigation Service on Tuesday 30 November 2010, also netted a significant quantity of illicit drugs.

A 33 year old Youngtown man was arrested by police after a search located a significant quantity of tablets believed to be MDMA, commonly known as “ecstasy”, in his possession. Police also located cannabis and methylamphetamine in the man’s possession.

The man was also charged with trafficking in a controlled substance and bailed to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court at a later date.
