Operation Crossroads – Day 5 Report – 28 Dec 2016

As we approach New Year’s Eve celebrations please remember the five key contributing factors to serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes:

  • Seatbelts
  • Speed
  • Alcohol and Drugs
  • Distraction
  • Fatigue

After reporting yesterday on the number of motorists this holiday period detected speeding, the message is yet to sink-in for some; Tasmania Police carried out a speed reduction operation in the south of the state and detected 10 motorists speeding above the posted speed limit within 1 hour.

Disappointingly, Tasmania Police in the south of the state detected a 36 yo female from Kingston, travelling 11km/h over the posted speed limit.  She was also charged with disqualified driving and failing to correctly restrain a 3½ yo child.  The female driver also returned a positive reading to an oral drug test. She was arrested, charged and detained to appear in court today.

“Again Tasmania Police find themselves dealing with a small minority of the community who demonstrate no regard for themselves, their passengers or for other road users.  Yet another case of a grave act of stupidity.” said Senior Sergeant Ian Mathewson.

Remember, don’t speed, don’t mix alcohol and drugs with driving, wear your seatbelt, pay attention and if you are feeling tired, pull over and take a break.
