Operation Crossroads – Day 6 Report – 29 Dec 2016

Tasmania Police continue to be out in numbers as part of Operation Crossroads to enforce and encourage safe driving behaviour in what is traditionally a high crash period.

Due to the rain on the states roads yesterday, Tasmania Police were kept busy attending a high number of minor motor vehicle crashes. Within a 24 hour period, 35 minor crashes were reported (a little over 1 an hour) across the state.

Motorists are reminded that travelling at excessive speed and by ignoring the road conditions remains the single most contributor to fatal and serious crashes. To date, almost 70% of infringement notices issued during Operation Crossroads have been to motorist travelling at excessive speeds on Tasmanian roads.

Motorists are urged to drive to the conditions, slow down, and be safe on the roads.

Additionally, as motorists commence travelling to the Falls Festival at Marion Bay, be patient as traffic congestion will be likely due to the large volume of traffic travelling to the same location.  Remain calm, do not adopt high-risk driving behaviours and get to the Falls Festival safely.

Please remember the five key contributing factors to serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes:

  • Seatbelts
  • Speed
  • Alcohol and Drugs
  • Distraction
  • Fatigue
