Plans – New Glenorchy Police Station

Tasmania Police is progressing plans for a new police station in Glenorchy.

The Department has identified the former Harvey Norman building on Main Road, Glenorchy, as a site with the potential to incorporate the Glenorchy Divisional Headquarters and other functions.

The purchase and redevelopment of the site are subject to the approval of the Glenorchy City Council and approval of a change in the planning scheme by the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

“The former Harvey Norman building is a significant size, providing the opportunity to develop a modern complex for the delivery of pro-active and intelligence led policing services,” said Acting Deputy Commissioner, Phil Wilkinson.

“The site is capable of consolidating other policing functions, such as Marine and Rescue Services,” said Mr Wilkinson.

“The accommodation and facilities at the existing Glenorchy Station are no longer consistent with contemporary policing needs and the new project will offer first-class facilities and equipment.”

The State Government has provided almost $19 million for the re-development of the Glenorchy, Devonport and Bellerive Police Stations.

The planning and development approval process is expected to be finalised later in 2013.
