Police investigating fatal crash on Bass Highway

Sadly, a girl from Tasmania’s North-West has died, and a woman has been seriously injured, in a two-vehicle traffic crash on the Bass Highway earlier today.

Police and emergency services were notified of the crash about 5.35pm on Thursday, with reports a white Subaru headed east and a white Toyota Hilux utility headed west were involved in a head-on collision on the Bass Highway, about 3.5km west of Somerset.

A 10-year-old girl who was a passenger in the Subaru sustained critical injuries and died at the scene.

The adult female driver of that vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where she remains in a serious condition.

A driver and his passenger in the Hilux sustained injuries which were not believed to be life-threatening, and they were taken to North West Regional Hospital at Burnie for assessment and treatment.

A section of the Bass Highway was closed in both directions for more than four hours while emergency services and crash investigators attended the incident.

A Tasmania Police crash investigation is under way.

Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has relevant dash cam footage, is asked to contact Police on 131 444.

Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of those involved.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
