Police renew call for information on anniversary of Lucille Butterworth’s disappearance

Police are renewing their call for public information on the anniversary of the disappearance of Lucille Gaye Butterworth, who tragically went missing and is believed to have been murdered on 25 August 1969.

Detective Inspector Mark Burke from Glenorchy CIB said, “with the significant passage of time that has passed since Lucille Butterworth went missing, police are hoping that now is the time someone will come forward and provide information that helps find justice for Lucille and bring closure to those that loved her.”

“This year marks 55 years since 20-year-old Lucille Gaye Butterworth went missing from a bus stop on Main Road at Claremont.”

“Lucille was last seen around 6pm on Monday 25 August 1969, wearing orange work clothes and a dark jacket/coat.”

“Extensive searches and investigations have been conducted until recent times, but sadly no trace of Lucille has been found.”

In 2016 the Coroner handed down findings following a Coronial Inquest, determining that Lucille accepted a lift from the bus stop, and was murdered on the Lyell Highway roughly half way between Granton and New Norfolk, around 6.15pm on 25 August 1969.

“Lucille’s disappearance was sudden and understandably devastated her family and friends who all deserve to know what happened to her.”

“We know there would be people in our community who know something about what happened to Lucille, and I implore those people to now come forward.”

“It is never too late, and no piece of information is too small. What you know may be the piece of information we need to find justice for Lucille.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Glenorchy CIB on 131 444 or report through Crime Stoppers Tasmania.

Crime Stoppers Tasmania Chair David Daniels said, “Crime Stoppers Tasmania gives you a chance to speak up without having to get involved in an investigation.”

“Crime Stoppers doesn’t need your name or personal details, just what you know, with as much detail as you can remember.”

“The time to come forward is now. If you know anything about the disappearance of Lucille, please step up and contact Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au”.
