A 23-year-old Hobart man has been charged after being caught drink driving more than four times the legal limit following a crash at Claremont overnight.

Police attended Main Road, Claremont about 1.20am, after locating a vehicle that had collided with a guard rail.

The driver underwent a breath test, returning a reading of 0.227, more than four times the legal limit for a full licence holder.

The man, who holds a provisional licence and is subject to a zero-blood alcohol requirement, was subsequently charged and bailed to appear in court at a later date.

His licence was immediately disqualified for 12 months.

Inspector Jason Klug said the alleged behaviour demonstrated a blatant disregard for the safety of other road users.

“Driving after consuming alcohol significantly impairs judgement, reaction times and decision-making ability, putting lives at risk,” Inspector Klug said.

“There is simply no excuse for getting behind the wheel after drinking. We urge all motorists to plan ahead and make safe choices.”
