Remains found at Kelly Basin

On Thursday 30 December 2010 human remains and items of clothing were found on a remote foreshore in Kelly Basin, South of Strahan. A small fibreglass dinghy was also located nearby which appears to have come from a 40 foot steel yacht named ‘Loru’ which was anchored 400 meters to the North in Kelly Basin.

Police Forensics and detectives attended both the scene onshore and examined the ‘Loru’ which belonged to a solo yachtsman, 71 year old Mr Douglas Money from Tamworth in N.S.W.

The remains appear to be consistent with a recent death, the cause of which is under investigation by police and the Coroner. Investigations to date have not given cause to believe the death is suspicious. A formal identification is also being advanced through dental, DNA and fingerprint records.

The relatives of Mr Money have been informed of the situation and they have confirmed that he had sailed his yacht from Port Lincoln, South Australia, to Strahan in Mid December before intending to sail solo around Macquarie Harbour.

In order to establish the recent movements of Mr Money and the yacht ‘Loru’, any person who has had contact with him in the past three weeks is asked to contact Burnie C.I.B. on 6434 5211.
