Response from Assistant Commissioner Phil Wilkinson

Tasmania Police takes all reports of dangerous driving extremely seriously.

In relation to a fatal crash that occurred near Conara on the Midland Highway on 9 July 2009, today’s front page of the Mercury Newspaper claims that “it can be revealed that police were warned before the crash about the disaster waiting to happen.”

The details of the police response to this incident were clearly articulated during a media conference which I held on the afternoon of Thursday 9 July 2009.

Attending media were informed that police had received two calls alerting them to a case of high speed, erratic driving. Media were also told that a ‘keep a lookout’ was posted to police units. This information was published and broadcast in subsequent media reports.

It is an opportune time to reassure members of the public that police will respond to all calls regarding dangerous driver behaviour, and I encourage any member of the public witnessing such behaviour to contact police immediately on 131 444.
