Single vehicle crash – Flinders Island

A 33 year old man has been seriously injured in a single vehicle rollover on Flinders Island overnight.

About 6.15pm last night, a single vehicle, single occupant crash occurred on Wingaroo Road near the property Markana Park, Flinders Island.

The driver was travelling south on Wingaroo Road in a Toyota Hilux single cab flat tray when he failed to negotiate a slight right hand continuous bend in the gravel road.

The vehicle slid sideways for approximately 20m and then rolled a number of times, coming to rest on its roof.

The man was not wearing a seatbelt.

Volunteer ambulance, SES and TFS personnel attended the scene, and the man was conveyed by road ambulance to Whitemark Hospital.  The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was activated by Ambulance Tasmania and transported the man to the Royal Hobart Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

Investigations into the crash are continuing. Early indications are that inattention was a contributing factor.
