Single Vehicle Fatality – Golf Links Road, Wynyard

At approximately 14.40 hrs on Thursday the 29th of December 2016, Police were called to a single vehicle crash on Golf Links Road at Wynyard.

The crash involved a 2012 white Hyundai i30 hatch that was travelling east on Golf Links Road.  The vehicle suddenly swerved off the east bound one way lane of Golf Links Road, crossing a grass median before crossing the west bound one way lane of Golf Links Road.  The vehicle then travelled down a 12 metre high embankment before coming to rest in the Inglis River.  At the time of the crash the tide was out and the vehicle came to rest in the muddy flats at the bottom of the embankment.

Paramedics attended and attempted CPR on the 81 year old male driver who was from Burnie, however they were unable to revive him and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.  The 75 year old female front seat passenger, also of Burnie, sustained minor injuries and was conveyed to hospital as a precaution.

Police state that none of the fatal five were factors in this crash.  Police believe a medical condition may be a contributing factor.

Tasmanian Ambulance personnel from Wynyard and Burnie, Tasmania Fire Service personnel from Wynyard and Burnie, Tasmania Police personnel from Wynyard, Burnie, Western Forensic Services and Western Crash Investigation attended the scene.

Investigations into the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
