Police have charged a 21-year-old learner driver from Conara with a range of driving offences after they caught the man drink driving in Campbell Town yesterday afternoon.

“Police from Northern Road and Public Order Services intercepted a green Holden Commodore on High Street, Campbell Town after it was seen travelling on the Midland Highway,” said Tasmania Police Inspector Ruth Orr.

“The vehicle had “P” plates displayed, but the driver was the holder of a learner’s licence and was not accompanied by a fully licenced adult.”

“Officers breath tested the driver, who returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.04.”

“This incident was especially concerning, as also travelling in the vehicle were four other passengers – including a small child.”

“Ahead of the long weekend, Tasmania Police would like to remind motorists to be safe while travelling on our roads.”

“Police will be conducting high-visibility patrols throughout the weekend, but we’ll also be using our unmarked cars and motorcycles.”

“Slow down, pay attention, drive to the conditions, rest if you’re tired and don’t get behind the wheel if you’re under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”

“Remember we could be anywhere, anytime, in any vehicle.”

The driver will appear in court at a later date.
