Vehicle – train crash, Ulverstone

At approximately 8.50am today, Monday 16th August 2010 a collision occurred on Kings Parade, Ulverstone, between a Holden Commodore station wagon and a freight train.

As a result of the collision, the 41 year old female driver of the Commodore and her 42 year old female passenger sustained minor injuries and were conveyed to the North West Regional Hospital, Burnie. The 50 year old male driver of the train and his 30 year old male passenger were uninjured.

The crash occurred when the driver of the Commodore failed to observe the oncoming train whilst attempting to cross the railway line. There are no signal warning lights at the crossing, however, there is a stop sign present.

Police would encourage all motorists to drive cautiously at level crossings.

Traffic was interrupted at Helen Street and Lovett Street for approximately 1.5 hours.
