Westbury shooting incident

About 9 am on Sunday 28 November a male police officer attended a residence at Jones Street in Westbury in response to a routine Keep the Peace call.

The Commander of the Northern District, Richard Cowling, said while at the residence an incident has occurred inside the house, resulting in the police officer being assaulted.

“During the assault the police officer has fired his service firearm and shot the 21-year-old resident,” said Commander Cowling.

“Responding police have provided first aid to the shot male. Ambulance services attended and provided first aid however the man was pronounced dead at the scene,” Commander Cowling said.

No-one else was in the house at the time of the incident.

The injured police officer was conveyed to the Launceston General Hospital where he received treatment for various injuries. He has since been released.

Police, including Police Professional Standards, and the Coroner attended the scene.

A full investigation will be conducted by Police Professional Standards.

The matter is now a Coronial Investigation.
