Youth charged with arson

Members of the Western Criminal Investigation Branch have charged a 16-year-old youth following an investigation into a deliberately lit fire at a property in East Devonport on Saturday evening.

Police will allege the youth deliberately lit a fire inside his bedroom at a residence on Canning Drive, East Devonport, causing extensive fire damage to the room and significant smoke damage throughout the remainder of the property. Damage is estimated at approximately $100,000.

The youth was arrested nearby shortly after the incident and later charged with arson. He has also been charged with two counts of common assault relating to separate incidents alleged to have occurred earlier this month.

The youth was detained to appear before the Youth Justice Court.
