Tasmania Police operates a drug diversion program called the Illicit Drug Diversion Initiative (IDDI).
Drug diversions are important as they help keep low-level drug offenders out of the court system and instead receive healthcare and support.
If a police officer questions you in relation to a drug-related offence, you are entitled to enquire about whether you may be eligible to receive a drug caution or diversion. Key eligibility criteria include that you are an adult who admits to possessing a personal use amount of drugs or drug paraphernalia.
What happens if I receive a diversion?
If you receive a diversion, you will be required to contact Alcohol and Drug Services Tasmania (1300 139 641) within three business days of receiving the diversion.
Alcohol and Drug Services will determine the appropriate next steps from there, including drug counselling or education.
If you do not complete the requirements of the diversion, you will receive a summons to attend court.
